The three games that were played in the T20 Blast 2019 on Wednesday were more or less one-sided encounters. Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire and Sussex were the three teams that emerged triumphant. Like usual, there were some great performances on display as well.

Philip Salt, Sam Hain played important knocks for their respective teams. The Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan played his first game of the season and potentially made the difference between the winning and the losing team. Even though he wasn’t at his complete best, his contribution was good enough to help his team with the game.

Here is how things progressed on the day:

Nottinghamshire vs Northamptonshire – North Group

After electing to bat first, Northamptonshire didn’t really bring out the kind of performance that was expected. Both their openers fell early. The likes of Joshua Cobb, Dwaine Pretorius got starts but couldn’t convert them into big scores. Graeme White provided the team with the final impetus with a 15-ball 27 which helped the batting side get to 152/8.

It was an easy chase for Nottinghamshire. Openers Joe Clarke and Alex Hales together added 79 runs for the first wicket. Ben Duckett mustered 26 runs while skipper Dan Christian and wicketkeeper Tom Moores finished the chase off with unbeaten knocks. They reached the target with 11 balls to spare.

Brief Scores:

NOR: 152/8 in 20 overs (Joshua Cobb 36, Dwaine Pretorius 34, Dan Christian 3/32)

NOTTS: 155/3 in 18.1 overs (Joe Clarke 45, Alex Hales 33, Graeme White 1/19)

Result: Nottinghamshire won by 7 wickets.

Warwickshire vs Derbyshire – North Group

Warwickshire got a huge score on the board after they were put in to bat first by the opposition. Even though they lost Ed Pollock and Michael Burgess for 0 and 3 runs respectively, Sam Hain and Adam Hose came to the rescue. While the former mustered 85 from 61, the latter raced his way to 69 off 35 balls. Ashton Agar scored 26 runs off 14 balls after that which helped them get to 205 in 20 overs.

Derbyshire fell way short of the target. Leus du Plooy was the only batsman who put up a fight with a 70-run knock. However, he didn’t find much support from the other batsmen. The next highest score in the innings was 29 by Daryn Smit. This resulted in a 49-run loss.

Brief Scores:

WARKS: 205/5 in 20 overs (Sam Hain 85, Adam Hose 69, Ravi Rampaul 3/21)

DERBY: 156/9 in 20 overs (Leus du Plooy 70, Daryn Smit 29*, Fidel Edwards 2/29)

Result: Warwickshire won by 49 runs.

Sussex vs Hampshire – South Group

Philip Salt got Sussex off to a great start even though the team lost some early wickets. He scored 73 runs and was assisted by David Wiese who was unbeaten on 44 from 29 balls. The team wasn’t heading towards a huge score until Rashid Khan came in. He tonked the bowlers for a couple of sixes and fours. His 7-ball 22 helped the team get to 188/6 in 20 overs.

Rilee Rossouw played an excellent knock of 60 from 38 balls in the chase. But he found very little support from the other batsmen. Skipper James Vince and Sam Northeast were dismissed for ducks as Reece Topley breathed fire with the new ball. He picked up four wickets while Danny Briggs got three. This helped Sussex win the game by a mere margin of 14 runs.

Brief Scores:

SUS: 188/6 in 20 overs (Philip Salt 73, David Wiese 44*, Chris Wood 2/30)

HAM: 174/10 in 19 overs (Rilee Rossouw 60, Lewis McManus 32, Reece Topley 4/33)

Result: Sussex won by 14 runs.
