A lot was expected of the West Indies before the T20 World Cup 2021 since they came into the tournament as the defending champions. However, Kieron Pollard and Co. have flattered to deceive and have been knocked out of the mega event. On Thursday, November 4, Sri Lanka beat them by 20 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, Lanka ended their campaign on a high.

Asalanka steps up for Sri Lanka

The Caribbean team didn’t have much to cheer for after electing to field first. Their bowlers didn’t look penetrative as Lanka smashed 189 in their allotted 20 overs. Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka stitched together a 42-run stand to push their opponent on the backfoot. Andre Russell separated the duo, getting rid of Perera, who was looking ominous, having scored 29 with two fours and a six.

Charith Asalanka carried on with his good form as he top-scored for Lanka with a 41-ball 68, laced with eight fours and one six. He got the apt support from Nissanka, who made 51 with five fours. The duo cobbled together a partnership of 91 runs for the second wicket. Dasun Shanaka came to bat in the 16th over and he scored 25 to make sure that his team reached a formidable score of 189 runs.

West Indies crumble under pressure

Binura Fernando gave the Lankans a rollicking start after he pinned both Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis. The left-handed Lewis promised with two fours before getting out. Pacer Chamika Karunaratne sent back Roston Chase to make West Indies sweat even more. Amidst the fall of wickets, the required rate steadily climbed up as the Caribbean team needed 118 runs to win in their last 10 overs.

Nicholas Pooran threatened to take the game away from Lanka after he scored a quickfire 46 off 34 balls. But Dushmantha Chameera ended his stay in the middle. Russell and Kieron Pollard fell cheaply as well. Shimron Hetmyer tried his heart out and notched 81 runs off 54 balls with the help of eight fours and four sixes. But the southpaw’s knock couldn’t take the West Indies over the line.
