Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal opened the innings for World XI in all the three games of the Independence Cup. In the final match of the series, Tamim got off to a cracking start by fetching three boundaries off-spinner Imad Wasim. It was the first over of the match and the opener didn’t shy away from going after the bowler.

But just when it seemed like the World XI will be unstoppable, Tamim lost his wicket to debutant Usman Khan, who bowled an inswinger that kept low. It was also Usman’s maiden international wicket. The visitors went on to lose the game, as none of the batsmen managed to score big and take his team to victory.

Tamim was the only Bangladesh cricketer to have participated in the series. And he was very happy and proud to have achieved this particular feat. Representing the World XI is no mean feat and Tamim’s name has gone down the history books.

Tamim cherishes the achievement

“I feel that representing the World XI is a big achievement for me and I’m very proud of it,” Tamim had told reporters in Dhaka before the start of the series. “I think that 10 Test playing nations are like a family. Someone has to help international cricket get back to Pakistan.
“They [ICC] have taken a fantastic initiative. If they are successful in hosting, I hope more international teams will visit Pakistan. It should have started at some stage. We have taken the first step. I think this is really a fantastic thing but it should have been organised a long time ago,” he said.

The southpaw managed just 55 runs from his three outings in the Independence Cup. Pakistan went on to win the series 2-1. It was their first victory on home soil in more than two years.
