The game of cricket is known for the sportsmanship that the players often show despite the on-field heated exchanges. But this sportsmanship seemed to have gone for a toss during the recently concluded Ranji Trophy 2017-18 finals. Team Delhi locked horns with Vidarbha in the finals of the tournament at the neutral venue, Indore.

The match turned out to be a historic one for various reasons. Team Vidarbha registered their first ever Ranji Trophy win. Meanwhile, team Delhi lost their opportunity of winning the coveted title after almost a decade. During the course of the game, several young names from Vidarbha’s side took charge and showed great grit to see their team through.

One of the star performers for them in the match, and also across the season, was batsman Akshay Wadkar. While Wadkar managed to draw a lot of praises for his on-field performances, he certainly was not well appreciated by the Delhi team players. One incident that perspired during the game show the ugly side of the Delhi team.

The players of the Rishabh Pant-led side showed no concerns whatsoever after Wadkar fell on the ground after being hit by a lethal bouncer. The action perspired on the penultimate day of the Ranji finals. Wadkar was batting against left arm pacer Kulwant Khejroliya. The left armer has been an impressive find for Delhi and has bowled some exceptional bouncers throughout the season.

It was the last ball of one of the overs that Khejroliya bowled on the day. He dug the ball short and hit the deck hard. The ball got the extra bounce and Wadkar was found wanting for more time to negotiate with it. He ended up being hurried on. The ball rose up to him in an awkward manner and ended up hitting his shoulder and helmet.

Soon after the concussion, Wadkar tried to stand still but ended up falling on the ground. It was surprising and shocking to see no Delhi team players offering help to the Vidarbha batsman. The players just changed ends after the over. Incidentally, even the on-field umpires chose to ignore the incident. It was the non-strike batsman who signaled to the dressing room for the help.
