Anil Kumble recently resigned from the post of head coach of India. He resigned after saying that his relations with captain Virat Kohli became ‘untenable’. News has emerged that the Indian team that is in West Indies is still trying to come to terms with the news. Reports suggest that the Indian team didn’t know that Kumble won’t join them while they were leaving from London. When they reached St. Lucia only then did they came to know that Kumble had resigned.

Team was shocked

According to a BCCI source, the team was shocked and found it difficult to come to terms with the news. “It came as a shock. The boys were dazed. There had been talk of him staying back in London to attend the ICC Cricket Committee meeting. We all thought he would join the team before the second ODI on June 25 at Port of Spain,” a source said as quoted by the Indian Express

The source added that the team was unhappy to read Kumble’s resignation statement on the Twitter. The former Indian skipper said that he was surprised to know that Virat had reservations about him. The source questioned and asked that how can it be that he didn’t know about this problem.

Kohli’s statement

Virat had maintained silence since this news broke, he decided to divulge details on the issue. “Obviously, Anil bhai has expressed his views and he’s taken the decision to step out and we will respect that decision. We have created a culture over the last three-four years that whatever happens in the changing room, we’ve tried to maintain the sanctity of the changing room throughout.” Virat Kohli said.

He further insisted that things in the dressing room are sacred and should be kept private. The skipper interestingly deleted his tweet in which he had congratulated Anil Kumble when he got the job.

The June 23, 2016 tweet read “Heartiest welcome to @anilkumble1074 Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian Cricket with you.”

Another point worth noting is that no member of the Indian team has acknowledged Kumble’s contribution as coach on social media.
