World Test Championship 2023

The second edition of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) has reached its business end with the eagerly-anticipated final to be played between fierce rivals- India and Australia. Billed as the ultimate Test, the two heavyweights will cross swords in a one-off match starting June 7, at The Oval in London for the coveted Test mace.

The current cycle (2021-23) began in July 2021 with top nine Test teams playing six series each including three at home and as many away. Unlike the first cycle (2019-21), the second edition saw a change in the points system as each team was awarded 12 points for winning a match, four for a draw and six for a tie.

The Aussies topped the WTC Points Table following a dominant two-year cycle and became the first team to confirm its spot in the summit clash, after a 2-0 win against South Africa in the three-match series in January 2023. On the other hand, team India clinched its place in the final showdown following a 2-1 win against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy played earlier this year. The Rohit Sharma-led side was also aided by New Zealand, who beat Sri Lanka in a thrilling affair as the Lankan Lions were in contention for a spot in the finals.

Team India will play its second WTC final as they ended up on the losing side in the finale of the first cycle against New Zealand, the 2021 WTC Winners. A reserve day has been allotted on June 12, so as to make up for any loss of play on the stipulated five days. Both India and Australia will be gunning to win the prestigious mace before turning their attention to the 2023 ODI World Cup.
