As per the chairman of the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators, Vinod Rai, the board is still trying to impose an international ban on Pakistan. Their real target is on countries that harbor terrorism despite a recent rejection but was non-committal on whether India will boycott Pakistan at the World Cup, scheduled to start on Thursday, May 30 in England and Wales.

In the wake of the Pulwama terror attack on February 14 where over 40 CRPF jawans were killed, the BCCI, in a letter to the ICC, urged the world body and its member nations to sever ties with countries that harbour terror, though it is still unclear whether the BCCI made a direct reference to Pakistan. Speculations are rife that it did not, and in its board meeting in Dubai last week, the International Cricket Council (ICC) dismissed the BCCI’s request.

Let the time come. It is still four months away

Rai, however, insisted that the ICC has not shot down BCCI’s request of banning Pakistan from international cricket. “The letter was placed. It clearly says Pakistan. It is a process which goes slow. Have we been able to boycott any of the countries in the Security Council? The process goes on slowly,” commented the former CAG, after a CoA meeting in New Delhi.

India and Pakistan are still scheduled to play each other in the World Cup on June 16. Rai said that the due process needs to be followed before the final decision can be taken on boycotting the match between the continental arch-rivals. “Let the time come. It is still four months away. We have expressed our concerns (over security) and they (ICC) said yes, ‘security will be tightened’ and everything else,” said Rai. The India-Pakistan matter will be among the issues the COA will discuss with ICC chairman Shashank Manohar in Mumbai later this month.

Additionally, Rai said that the long-standing issue of WADA compliance of the BCCI will also be discussed with the ICC chairman. The ICC said in a statement last week that its board “unanimously acknowledged its desire to remain WADA compliant” and would work with WADA, BCCI and India’s NADA for the same. The BCCI remains non-compliant to WADA currently, which would jeopardise ICC’s bid to take Cricket to the Olympics in 2028.
