The second edition of the hugely successful the Hundred is upon fans, and leading up to the tournament, former England skipper Eoin Morgan revealed that he believes it is a massive opportunity for players to make their place in the international squads given the high standard of the competition.

The recently retired England international is one of the biggest advocates of the competition and had previously backed the competition to ‘fine-tune’ the English white ball team. Eoin Morgan will be leading London Spirit in this year’s competition and stated that this is the closest he has ever felt to international level playing in a domestic league.

“It is the closest I have ever played at the domestic level to international cricket. The Hundred is as good a stake as anybody can make to try and get into that final 15. If the English white-ball head coach (Matthew Mott) says there is, then there definitely is, so that is a huge incentive for the younger batter, bowler, and fielder coming through to try and make his way into that World Cup team,” Morgan was quoted saying by Sky Sports.

Defending champions Southern Brave will square up against Welsh fire in the opening fixture of the second edition of the competition commencing on the 3rd of August (Wednesday) at The Rose Bowl, Southampton.

The Hundred is just an opportunity for Jason Roy to score runs: Eoin Morgan

The flamboyant southpaw also shed light on the recent troubles of English opener Jason Roy, who struggled for runs throughout the white ball series against India and South Africa. Morgan stated that the attacking right-hand batter could destroy any bowling lineup on his day and can uplift the mood in the dressing room. It is a great opportunity for someone like him to regain his form and confidence by scoring runs in the 100-ball tournament.

“Anybody who has tracked Jason Roy’s career in international cricket has seen the highs and lows of Jason but the one thing you get with him is that when he is on song, he can take any bowling line up down and that sends a huge message not only to the opposition but to your changing room when you are in it, So, The Hundred is just an opportunity for him to go score runs,” the former England captain added.
