Southern Brave picked up their third straight victory of The Hundred Women’s 2022 against the Manchester Originals in a close encounter and are yet to be beaten this season. With the win, the Southern Brave moved to the top of the points table while Manchester Originals suffered their second loss.

Earlier in the game, Manchester Originals opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the Southern Brave openers, Smriti Mandhana and Dani Wyatt got off to a great start. Mandhana in particular took the onus of finding the gaps up front and scored a 25-ball 43 which included six fours and two sixes. Wyatt played a handy knock from the other end with a 24-ball 31 which included four fours.

Sophia Dunkley and M Bouchier looked to press the accelerator button once the openers perished and Dunkley was dismissed after a 21-ball 25. Bouchier remained unbeaten on 23 off 17 deliveries with two fours while Freya Kemp (11) gave the innings the finishing touch with a much-needed six before getting run out off the last ball of the innings. The Southern Brave finished at 136 for 5 with Ecclestone being the pick of the bowlers for the Manchester Originals with figures of 2 for 32.

Emma Lamb’s half-century goes in vain

In reply, Manchester Originals started the chase on a positive note and Lizelle Lee (25) scored a flurry of boundaries at the start to bring the required run rate down. From the other end, Emma Lamb was striking it well and reached her half-century while the incoming batters found it tough to go. Amanda-Jade Wellington’s introduction to the bowling attack was the turning point as she picked up three wickets in a relatively quick span.

Lamb was dismissed for a 45-ball 57 which included four fours and a six and the equation got much tougher once she was dismissed with 19 to win. The Southern Brave put out a spirited effort in the final overs to clinch the game by nine runs from nowhere. Lauren Bell and Anya Shrubsole bowled economical spells and were among the wickets for the Southern Brave apart from Wellington’s three-wicket haul.
