In the last ten years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has helped shape the youth of Indian cricket and a number of names have come up who went on to play for the national side after a good display for their franchise. However, with regards to the recently concluded IPL 2018 auction, the former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly said that “IPL is not a yardstick to judge any player’s value”.

When asked to comment on India’s regular Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha being sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad only for Rs 5 crores while Dinesh Karthik got a much larger pay package worth Rs 7.4 crores from the Kolkata Knight Riders Ganguly said that a player cannot be judged by the best bid he gets in the auction.

Take the case of Amla

He used the example of Hashim Amla who went unsold and Isan Kishan who got a contract worth 6.2 crore from the Mumbai Indians; two players of completely different class and stature at the highest level to further clarify his perspective.

“You cannot judge players based on IPL money. Hashim Amla went unsold. He has 54 centuries. Delhi’s Ishan Kishan has got 6.2 crores playing only Ranji Trophy,” Ganguly said.

Not just the Protea veteran, among the other big names which remained unsold this IPL are Lasith Malinga, Martin Guptill and Shaun Marsh – who helped Kings XI Punjab form their foundation in the league. To drive home his point that IPL is a money-driven tournament where the ultimate interests of the investors lie in the final result a player can bring in exchange of the price.

He went on to add, “IPL is a different format and you have to look at it that way. IPL has no rationale, it is supply and demand. Jaydev Unadkat is the highest paid Indian player. He has played two ODIs and no Tests.”
