The Final of the 2019 World Cup kept one and all at the edge of their seats. Hosts England and New Zealand, who was being considered as the underdogs, produced some jaw-dropping display of cricket at the renowned Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The match went down to the Super Over and the Three Lions came out trumps to get their hands on the silverware for the maiden time.

After getting knocked out embarrassingly in the 2015 edition of the mega event, the Three Lions made amends and gave their supporters a lot to cheer for. As far as the game is concerned, the Black Caps won the toss and elected to bat first. Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham scored 55 and 47 respectively and helped their team post a respectable score of 241 on the board in 50 overs.

England romp home to glory

The target wasn’t expected to pose much threat to the in-form English batting lineup. However, the Brits came out firing on all cylinders and made their opponents sweat. In 23.1 overs, England lost their top-four with 86 on the board. Thereafter, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler put their heads down and bailed England out of jail. Following Buttler’s dismissal, the onus was completely on Stokes.

The left-hander remained calm, pulled off 84 priceless runs and tied the game. The contest went into the Super Over. Even the one-eliminator got tied with both the sides, scoring 15 runs each. However, New Zealand needed to score 16 as they had hit a lesser number of boundaries than Eoin Morgan and Co. To their agony, they couldn’t and the home team got over the line in the thriller.

Meanwhile, the Queen was delighted by England’s performance in the mega event. She congratulated the English team and sent a couple of messages, posted on The Royal Family’s Twitter handle.

“Prince Philip and I send our warmest congratulations to the England Men’s Cricket team after such a thrilling victory in today’s World Cup final,” the first message read.

I also extend my commiserations to the runners-up New Zealand, who competed so admirably in today’s contest and throughout the tournament,” her second message read.
