A lot is being said before the fourth and the final Test between India and Australia, there are a lot of former players giving their take on how the Test match will pan out and Steve Waugh is one of them. Waugh is a man of few words but when he speaks he makes sure he says something wise and at par with his reputation and expectations from him.
The former Australian World Cup winning skipper has been a part of Indian tours before and knows how hard it is beating India in their own den. Australia have put up a fantastic fight and are currently taking home the Border-Gavaskar Trophy since after the first three matches things stand levels at 1-1.
Steve believes that the biggest bonus for Australia currently is Pat Cummins. The man has come in for Mitchell Starc and has made a huge difference. The last match saw him take four wickets and bowl wonderfully well. Waugh was all praise of his partnership with Josh Hazlewood as well.
He said while talking to cricket.com.au: “I think the big bonus for Australia for this Test match is Pat Cummins. I like the way he’s come into the side and together with Hazlewood, they can form a really potent opening partnership. If there’s any life in the pitch, they’ll be really crucial.”
He believes that Australia should go unchanged in the coming Test match as they have done extremely well as a unit in the third Test. He specially mentioned Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb for their effort. He also believes that David Warner is gearing up for a huge performance.
“I really admired the way the side fought hard in that last Test match. Cummins came into the side and made a huge impact, while batting-wise Shaun Marsh did a really good job together with (Peter) Handscomb. All the batsmen are pretty much in form and I think David Warner is ready for a big score,” exclaimed Waugh.
The 51-year-old believes that India are under pressure going into the final Test as no one gave Australia a chance but they have performed out of their skin. Waugh also said that Australia needs to go and play their game without thinking much.
“I think a lot of the pressure is on the Indian side. They’ve been expected to win this series and they now come into this Test match with the possibility of losing it. So for Australia, it’s about enjoying it, working together and not looking too far ahead,” opined Waugh.
