The opening T20I took place between India and Australia on December 4, and India won it in a classic style to take the much-needed lead in the T20I series. What became the talking point of the match was the concussion replacement of Ravindra Jadeja, which happened to be Yuzvendra Chahal. Jadeja was already down with the hamstring, and after he got hit by the ball on his helmet, the on-field umpire allowed the replacement for India.

Chahal walked in as the replacement for India and led India to a classic victory by taking three significant wickets. Australia’s coach Justin Langer was seen with an unsatisfied look on his face while talking to the umpire as he allowed Chahal to take over. In the same light, Sanjay Manjrekar feels that absence of India physio Nitin Patel’s while the whole thing unfolded on the field was a breach of concussion protocol.

“There’s one important breach of protocol that has happened. I’m sure the match referee will raise with India, but one of the main things with that protocol, the moment you get hit on the head, the physio had to spend time with the batsman out there, asking how he feels. The physio (Nitin Patel in this case) has to come in, and there’re a certain set of questions that need to be asked. With Jadeja, it just happened, there was hardly any delay, and he continued playing,” said Manjrekar while commentating on Sony Six.

Ravindra Jadeja’s batting after concussion didn’t anything big for India: Manjrekar

Manjrekar added that Jadeja continued to bat even after his injury, but it didn’t create much impact as the team added only nine runs after it. However, the credibility of his injury can definitely be in question. He added that match referee David Boon didn’t have any option rather than allowing a concussion substitute. He couldn’t have denied it, but there was no attention given to Jadeja at the time of impact.

“I would say one thing though, David Boon had no choice but to give India the concussion substitute because he wouldn’t have the courage to say he wouldn’t allow it because, at the time of impact, no attention was given,” added Manjrekar.
