Kieron Pollard has announced his retirement from international cricket but he will continue to ply his trade in T20 competitions worldwide. As of now, the West Indies all-rounder is serving the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. So far, it has been a disastrous campaign for the five-time champions as they have lost their first six games and a couple of more defeats will see their official ouster from the playoff race.

Pollard’s form has been one of the major concerns for MI as the West Indies dasher has looked far away from his best. The 34-year-old has struggled to score freely in the end overs as MI have endured a hard time scoring quick runs in the end overs. Analyzing Pollard’s performance and role, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned the dasher’s permanent place in the playing XI.

He reckons Pollard shouldn’t be included as a proper batter and MI must only back him if he can contribute with the ball as well. Notably, Pollard has bowled just seven overs in six games so far, scalping one wicket and conceding runs at an economy rate of 10. With the bat, he has scored 82 runs at an average of 16.4.

“I don’t know whether Mumbai Indians ever think of Pollard being dispensable. But I believe that Pollard has to bowl at least three overs if not four because the team needs a bowler desperately. I think under pressure he is better than a lot of bowlers in this side. So if he is not bowling and continuing only to bat finally, I think they got to look at the scores and the contributions of Pollard,” Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

Pollard’s former teammate Carlos Brathwaite also reckons the veteran must step up soon amid the side’s dismal run this season. “For the first time in a couple of seasons, I will probably say yes. But Pollard brings so much to Mumbai Indians. He is a stalwart to the franchise and he will get a long rope as usual. But he needs to start performing very soon because the team is not winning,” said the Windies all-rounder.
