Former Pakistan speedster and coach Waqar Younis has urged Misbah-ul-Haq and his boys to seize the opportunity to script history by clinching their first ever series victory in Australia in 52 years. Pakistan who recently lost the Test series against New Zealand 0-2 will be looking to claim their first series in Australia against a new look Australian squad.

The Test series is scheduled to kick off on December 15 with the 1st Test being played at Brisbane. “It’s never easy in Australia on these bouncy pitches, but I feel this is their [Pakistan’s] best chance to beat Australia,” Misbah was quoted by Express Tribune as saying. The team has traditionally struggled in Australia and has won only 4 out of 29 matches.

Despite Pakistan’s poor outings down under, Waqar feels the situation is completely different this time around as they would meet a completely new Australian side that has made as many as six changes in their 12-man squad for the 3rd Test against South Africa. Though Australia won the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide, South Africa had already pocketed the series in the 2nd Test after inflicting crushing defeats on the hosts in the first two Tests.

“Fair enough they [Australia] won against South Africa, but there are definitely loopholes they can look into,” said Waqar. “In the past we always feared Australia, thinking they are the better side – but not at the moment. I don’t know what will happen in a couple of years, the Aussies always know how to bounce, back but yes at the moment Pakistan stands a good chance,” he added.

The former head coach also stated that the current Pakistan outfit was much more settled than the Aussies despite losing the Test series in New Zealand by a 0-2 margin.

“Pakistan have been a very settled side the last couple of years, they’ve been playing really good cricket but they have to play to their potential,” he said.

The Gabba Test will be followed by the “Boxing Day” Test at MCG from December 26-30 and the New Year Test at SCG from January 3-7.
