Three Australians interested in coaching Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is looking for a head coach for the Sri Lankan national team since current coach Nick Pothas failed to impress SLC, thus they are looking for a new coaching unit. With a coaching position vacant three former Australian cricketers have shown their interest for the position.

“Few Australian players have shown interest to be the coach, but we have not finalized with anyone yet”, an SLC insider said on condition of anonymity. However, the person didn’t elaborate much on the candidates, who showed their interest for the position, but he revealed the name if Dean Jones, Jason Gillespie and Andrew McDonald, who are interested to play the role of head coach.

“I can confirm that Dean Jones, Jason Gillespie and Andrew McDonald have shown interest,” the source quoted by Kashmir Times added further. Dean Jones, the former top-order Australian baseman who played 52 Tests and 164 ODIs, is technically equipped with the three departments.i

Meanwhile, 42-year-old former fast bowler Gillespie is an experienced coach with his stints n Zimbabwe, IPL, BBL and in county cricket for Yorkshire. Gillespie, the World Cup-winning Australian fast bowler has played 71 Tests, 97 ODIs and 1 T20I whereas McDonald, the Victoria coach has played only four Tests.

It is still not certain whether these three former Australian players were interviewed or not, but it could be confirmed among these three only one was interviewed by the SLC. And the candidate was also seen in a positive mood.

Meanwhile, SLC has interviewed Chandika Hathurusingha for the position of batting coach. Hathurusingha, who was earlier a shadow coach under Kumar Sangakkara’s captaincy, is the head coach of Bangladesh national team.
