Within a span of few months, Rohit Sharma has become India’s all-format captain and expectations are sky high from the dashing opener. While Rohit already had the reins of white-ball teams, he was named the Test captain on Saturday (February 19). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the major announcement while naming squads for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka.

Interestingly, Rohit’s maiden leadership assignment in ODI and T20I was also recorded against the Lankan Lions. He did well in those fixtures and would like to replicate his heroics. It must be noted that, Rohit, who took Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, is a proven leader. However, he’s yet to take the leadership role in the longest format of the game.

Rohit Sharma likes shining against the odds

Hence, only time would tell how he fares in the new role. Meanwhile, one of Rohit’s tweet from 2018 went viral soon after BCCI made him the Test skipper. Back then, the right-handed batter, who was away from cricketing duties, had conducted a Q/A session on Twitter. On being asked about a quote which describes him, Rohit had replied: “Throw me to the wolves and I come back leading the pack.”

This reply clearly shows how much Rohit likes challenges and hence, fans can’t keep calm. Meanwhile, the batter’s appointment as Test skipper wasn’t obvious. As Rohit has been prone to injuries and will turn 35 in April this year, many members of the cricket fraternity reckoned one of the youngsters should take the role.

However, the BCCI selectors kept their faith on the veteran cricketer. “Rohit is the No.1 cricketer of our country. He’s absolutely fit and fine. The grooming becomes easy when a big player like him becomes a captain,” said chief selector Chetan Sharma.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka are set to travel India for three T20Is and a couple of Test matches, starting from February 24. Jasprit Bumrah will serve deputy to Rohit in the series.
