Kiwi batsman Tom Latham took a spectacularly anticipated catch in New Zealand’s domestic tournament, the Plunket Shield, on Wednesday. Latham, who was representing Canterbury, ran all the way from first slip to leg slip to complete the grab after he anticipated the batsman would play a paddle sweep. Northern District’s Ish Sodhi, who was batting on 50, couldn’t believe that he was dismissed after the slip fielder took the catch.

Sodhi played the ball fine and scampered out of his crease to take a couple of runs. However, he looked behind in utter disbelief to find Latham tumbling to the ground claiming the catch. He was at first slip, and the batsman was hence shocked to see the fielder had travelled that distance to grab the ball.

Latham made the run a few fractions before the ball had even pitched. As soon as Sodhi positioned himself to play the sweep shot, the fielder began to take quick steps to his left in an effort to take the catch behind the wicket-keeper. The batsman had however played the ball a bit squarer than expected, but Latham nevertheless managed to cover the ground and dive to complete an incredible catch.

Cole McConchie was the bowler, who opened his account in the wickets column thanks to the perfectly anticipated catch by Tom Latham. The Blackcaps batsman himself ended the innings with 4 grabs. Batting first, the Northern Districts piled up runs on the board following a poor start to their innings. All-rounder Colin de Grandhoome led with the bat with a brilliant 115. Contributions from Dean Brownlie, Daryl Mitchell and Ish Sodhi meant the Districts finished with a first innings total of 378.

In reply, Canterbury lost both their openers including Tom Latham as they went to Stumps on Day 2 trailing by 295 runs with 8 wickets in hand.
