Sunil Gavaskar was one of the greatest top order batsmen of all time. He was an invaluable player for India. Coming from Mumbai, this “Khadoos” cricketer hated to give away his wicket. His technique was near perfect which he combined with grit, determination, and solid concentration to make tall intimidating fast bowlers look like dwarfs in front of him. Gavaskar was famous for playing long innings. There have been 12 occasions when he has moved forward from century to score a 150+ knock. His 236* against the mighty West Indies at Chennai is his highest career score. He faced a challenging Windies bowling attack featuring Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Winston Davis and Andy Roberts. His penchant for century making can be clearly understood by the fact that he broke Don Bradman’s record of 29 centuries and finished his career with a record 34 centuries against his name.
