It was the 1<sup>st</sup> Test match of the tour and Bangladesh were dismissed for a paltry 184 in the first innings. India too were struggling at 24-2 when Sachin walked in to bat. The maestro played the innings of his life with an unbeaten 248 embellished with 35 boundaries. He nearly ran out of partners in the 190s &#8211; with Kumble and Harbhajan Singh not lasting too long – it was then that he found an unlikely ally in Zaheer Khan. The duo put on 133 runs for the last wicket. Zaheer lost his calm and was stumped on 75 and the little master was left unbeaten on 248. India won the match by an innings and 140 runs.

<strong>9. Marlon Samuels – 260 v Bangladesh at Khulna (21 November 2012):</strong>

It was the 2<sup>nd</sup> Test of the two-match series in Bangladesh. West Indies started their innings with a trail of 387 runs. Having come into bat at 43-2, Samuels had a marathon stay of 618 minutes at the crease. He had good partnerships with DM Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (both scoring centuries). But it was Samuels who went on to steal the show with a gritty 260. He was dismissed by Rubel Hossain. The damage was already done, though; Samuels hit 31 fours and 3 sixes before being dismissed. The Windies went on to win the match by 10 wickets.

Javed Miandad was perhaps the most well-known cricketer for his aggression in his era. Miandad scored the third double century of his career when he struck 260 off 521 deliveries against England. His stay at the crease was for 617 minutes and his innings included 28 boundaries and a six. The match was however drawn. It was the 15<sup>th</sup> century of his career.

Sir Frank Worrell was a stylish West Indian right-handed batsman who became famous for becoming the first black captain of the West Indian team in the 1950s. He made his highest Test score of 261 against England at Trent Bridge in 1950, and was awarded with the Wisden Cricketer of the Year for his stellar performances that year in 1951. He hit 35 boundaries and 2 sixes in that historic innings.

Aravinda de Silva is regarded as one of the classiest batsmen of his era, and to date is the only player to make a hundred and take 3 or more wickets in a World Cup final match. He was a perfect choice for the number 4 batting position for the temperament that he carried. It was the venue of the Basin Reserve in Wellington that witnessed the innings of 267 from this man. The performance is the sixth-highest score by a Sri Lankan batsman in Test cricket. It was the fourth century of his career. The match ended in a draw.

Javed Miandad features in the list again. The innings of 271 came off 558 deliveries. It was the last double ton of Miandad’s illustrious career. He struck 28 boundaries and 5 towering sixes. The brutal batsman made full use of the short boundaries at Auckland. It was unfortunate for him that the match ended in a draw. The Sri Lankan team toured India for the Jaypee Cup in 2009 for 3 Tests, 5 ODIs, and 2 T20Is. On a belter of a wicket at Motera, in response to India’s 426, Sri Lanka put on 760-7 dec. kudos to a 435 balls 275 by Mahela. He and Prasanna Jayawardene&#8217;s 351-run partnership was the highest score for a 6th wicket partnership. The record was broken in 2015 by BJ Watling and Kane Williamson. The match ended in a draw and Jayawardene was awarded the Man of the Match.

Daryll Cullinan, the youngest South African to score a first-class century at the age of 16, notched up a classy unbeaten 275 against New Zealand. He struck 27 boundaries and 2 sixes. This was his highest Test score which was a South African record at the time (as of 2012 the highest score by a South African in Tests is 311 not out by Hashim Amla versus England).

The batting legend Brian Charles Lara announced his arrival on the world stage at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in January 1993 with a memorable knock of 277. Lara’s glittering career is abounding with big scores, and his innings of 277 at the SCG was the first in a long list that was to unfold in the years to come. Indeed, it was his first-ever Test hundred. The first century being a double ton is an achievement in itself. Not only he launched himself but also he cemented the number 4 spot for himself. He struck 38 boundaries in that innings.

The essence of the innings lies in the fact that the innings came in when it was needed the most. Seven days before his epic knock lit up the WACA, he was among New Zealand&#8217;s more disappointing performers as the tourists slumped to a 208-run defeat at Brisbane to go 1-0 down in the three-match series. It is the individual performances that add up to ensure the team success in a Test match. When it comes to batting, the number 4 spot is considered to be the most vital one. The challenge gets tougher if the match is being played on the foreign soil. Albeit many legends of the game have donned the number 4 spot like Sachin Tendulkar, Damien Martyn, Jacques Kallis, Inzamam-Ul-Haq and many more; there have been a few who have etched their names in the record books.</p>

<h4><strong>10. Sachin Tendulkar &#8211; 248* v Bangladesh at Dhaka (10 December 2004):</strong></h4>

<p>The history books remember this majestic innings from the little master as his highest individual score in Test cricket. It was the 1<sup>st</sup> Test match of the tour and Bangladesh were dismissed for a paltry 184 in the first innings. India too were struggling at 24-2 when Sachin walked in to bat. The maestro played the innings of his life with an unbeaten 248 embellished with 35 boundaries. He nearly ran out of partners in the 190s &#8211; with Kumble and Harbhajan Singh not lasting too long – it was then that he found an unlikely ally in Zaheer Khan. The duo put on 133 runs for the last wicket. Zaheer lost his calm and was stumped on 75 and the little master was left unbeaten on 248. India won the match by an innings and 140 runs.</p>

<h4><strong>9. Marlon Samuels – 260 v Bangladesh at Khulna (21 November 2012):</strong></h4>

<p>It was the 2<sup>nd</sup> Test of the two-match series in Bangladesh. West Indies started their innings with a trail of 387 runs. Having come into bat at 43-2, Samuels had a marathon stay of 618 minutes at the crease. He had good partnerships with DM Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (both scoring centuries). But it was Samuels who went on to steal the show with a gritty 260. He was dismissed by Rubel Hossain. The damage was already done, though; Samuels hit 31 fours and 3 sixes before being dismissed. The Windies went on to win the match by 10 wickets.</p>
<h4><strong>8. Javed Miandad – 260 v England at The Oval (6 August 1987):</strong></h4>

<p>Javed Miandad was perhaps the most well-known cricketer for his aggression in his era. Miandad scored the third double century of his career when he struck 260 off 521 deliveries against England. His stay at the crease was for 617 minutes and his innings included 28 boundaries and a six. The match was however drawn. It was the 15<sup>th</sup> century of his career.</p>
<h4><strong>7. Frank Worrell – 261 v England at Nottingham (20 July 1950):</strong></h4>

<p>For the ones who might wonder who the man is, here is a piece of information. Sir Frank Worrell was a stylish West Indian right-handed batsman who became famous for becoming the first black captain of the West Indian team in the 1950s. He made his highest Test score of 261 against England at Trent Bridge in 1950, and was awarded with the Wisden Cricketer of the Year for his stellar performances that year in 1951. He hit 35 boundaries and 2 sixes in that historic innings.</p>
<h4><strong>6. Aravinda de Silva – 267 v New Zealand at Wellington (31 January 1991):</strong></h4>

<p>Aravinda de Silva is regarded as one of the classiest batsmen of his era, and to date is the only player to make a hundred and take 3 or more wickets in a World Cup final match. He was a perfect choice for the number 4 batting position for the temperament that he carried. It was the venue of the Basin Reserve in Wellington that witnessed the innings of 267 from this man. The performance is the sixth-highest score by a Sri Lankan batsman in Test cricket. It was the fourth century of his career. The match ended in a draw.</p>

<p>Javed Miandad features in the list again. The innings of 271 came off 558 deliveries. It was the last double ton of Miandad’s illustrious career. He struck 28 boundaries and 5 towering sixes. The brutal batsman made full use of the short boundaries at Auckland. It was unfortunate for him that the match ended in a draw. Out of the 6 double centuries that he scored, Pakistan was victorious in only a single match; others ending in a drawn. His career highest score was 280* against India at Faisalabad.</p>
<h4><strong>4. Mahela Jayawardene – 275 v India at Ahmedabad (16 November 2009):</strong></h4>

<p>The Sri Lankan team toured India for the Jaypee Cup in 2009 for 3 Tests, 5 ODIs, and 2 T20Is. On a belter of a wicket at Motera, in response to India’s 426, Sri Lanka put on 760-7 dec. kudos to a 435 balls 275 by Mahela. He and Prasanna Jayawardene&#8217;s 351-run partnership was the highest score for a 6th wicket partnership. The record was broken in 2015 by BJ Watling and Kane Williamson. The match ended in a draw and Jayawardene was awarded the Man of the Match.</p>
<h4><strong>3. Daryll Cullinan – 275* v New Zealand at Auckland (27 February 1999):</strong></h4>

<p>Daryll Cullinan, the youngest South African to score a first-class century at the age of 16, notched up a classy unbeaten 275 against New Zealand. He struck 27 boundaries and 2 sixes. This was his highest Test score which was a South African record at the time (as of 2012 the highest score by a South African in Tests is 311 not out by Hashim Amla versus England).</p>

<p>The batting legend Brian Charles Lara announced his arrival on the world stage at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in January 1993 with a memorable knock of 277. Lara’s glittering career is abounding with big scores, and his innings of 277 at the SCG was the first in a long list that was to unfold in the years to come. Indeed, it was his first-ever Test hundred. The first century being a double ton is an achievement in itself. Not only he launched himself but also he cemented the number 4 spot for himself. He struck 38 boundaries in that innings.</p>
<h4><strong>1. Ross Taylor – 290 v Australia At Perth (13 November 2015):</strong></h4>

<p>And the numero uno spot goes to Ross Taylor who struck a brilliantly composed innings of 290 off 374 balls with 43 boundaries. The essence of the innings lies in the fact that the innings came in when it was needed the most. Seven days before his epic knock lit up the WACA, he was among New Zealand&#8217;s more disappointing performers as the tourists slumped to a 208-run defeat at Brisbane to go 1-0 down in the three-match series. Apart from becoming the batsman with highest individual score at the number 4 position, the Kiwi did a fair bit of damage to other records too, most notably ending Englishman Tip Foster&#8217;s 112-year reign as the highest scoring visiting batsman in Australia. Taylor fell just ten short of his triple century and was dismissed by Nathan Lyon.</p>
