When the World T20 began, it did not appear to be a batsmen’s tournament. The wickets were slow and dry and batsmen found it really difficult to get going. As the tournament progressed, the pitch wore a slightly friendly look but run scoring was still not easy. It was made sure that competition between bat and ball is even. But, regardless of the challenges, the World T20 saw some extraordinary batting shows. The ‘Willow Wielders’ took the challenge head on and adapted very quickly to scores heaps runs for their teams. 5. Jos Buttler – 191 Runs: England’s Jos Buttler. Buttler, batting in the middle order played a couple of delightful cameos for his team against South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies in the Super 10 stage. He continued to impress with his hard hitting in the knockouts as well. In the semi-final against New Zealand, he blazed quick cameo of 32 off just 17 balls. In the all-important final, when the team was struggling to get quick runs, Buttler entered and smoked 36 off just 22 balls. All his entertaining performances accounted to 191 runs in 6 games at an average of 47.75. 4. Mohammad Shahzad – 222 Runs: Mohammad Shahzad of Afghanistan. The explosive opener had been the highlight of Afghanistan’s inspiring show in the tournament. The 28-year-old portly wicketkeeper made 222 runs in 7 games at an average of 31.71. He had done well in patches previously but hogged the limelight in this World T20. His cheerful personality and fearsome batting is a unique combination. His performance in the WT20 has taken him to the 12th position in the T20 rankings. 3. Joe Root – 249 Runs: Joe Root. (Photo Source: Twitter) Joe Root has established himself as England’s most reliable batsman across all the three format. This World T20 proved to be a memorable one for him as he played a crucial role in taking England to the finals. Root started the tournament quite well with scores of 48 and 83 against West Indies and South Africa. But, the next couple of matches were lukewarm for him. He did not get much opportunity in the middle in the semis. In the grand finale against the West Indians, Root showed his class with a fighting half century to rescue England to a decent total batting first. 2. Kohli made 273 runs in 5 games at a whopping average of 136.50. India’s journey till the semi-finals was possible largely because of his batting show. Kohli began with an average knock against New Zealand but went on to play match-defining knocks against Pakistan and Australia in a tricky situation during the Super 10 stage to single-handedly help India sail through to the semis. The Virat Show continued in the semis where they met the West Indies. He once again did his part with a crucial 82, batting in the first innings to take India to a highly formidable position but they couldn’t stop the Windies batsmen from chasing it down. 1. Tamim Iqbal – 295 Runs: Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal. (Photo by STR/AFP/Getty Images) Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal took the responsibility of being the senior most batsman in the team brilliantly. Iqbal was available for the whole tournament and played in all games except the one against Australia where he missed out due to an illness. He finished as the highest run-getter of the tournament. In the qualifiers, he milked majority of his tournament runs, scoring 233 runs in 3 games including a half-century and career best 103* against Oman.
