India will take on Australia in the first of their three ODIs in Sydney in a day-night affair on November 27. The visitors will be keen to defend their 2-1 victory that they achieved in their memorable tour Down Under in 2018-19. India trail Australia 52-78 in the 50-over format and have just one bilateral ODI series in Australia out of two played so far.

1. Rohit Sharma 171 not out in Perth in January 2016; Australia won by 5 wickets

The man, who is known for playing big knocks in the 50-over format, holds the highest individual score in the India-Australia series both in India and Australia. While he slammed a 209 against the Kangaroos in Bangalore in 2013, he produced an unbeaten 171 in 163 balls in Perth in the first game of the five-match series in 2016. It was India’s first-ever bilateral series in Australia and visiting skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first.

Rohit launched his innings from the word go after he came out to open with Shikhar Dhawan (9). After the opening pair put up 36, Rohit teamed up with Virat Kohli (91) to add 207 runs for the second wicket in less than 38 overs. Rohit completed his hundred in 122 balls but then went on to complete his 150 in just 155 balls. The knock was studded with 13 fours and seven sixes. India finished at 309 for 3 in 50 overs — a total one thought could have been more as one opener remained unbeaten for 170-plus.

With this knock, Rohit became the quickest to make 1,000 runs against Australia, taking only 19 innings. It was his ninth international ton, fourth against the Aussies and third in Australia. India, however, failed to stop the home team from storming home in the final over with captain Steven Smith and George Bailey belting 149 and 112, respectively. Australia won the game by 5 wickets to take a 1-0 lead but Rohit’s glittering knock still remains one of the best played against Australia in Australia. It was the highest individual score in the ODIs against Australia in Australia at the time but was bettered by England’s Jason Roy in Melbourne in 2018.
