MS Dhoni to lead Indian Team for Zimbabwe tour, senior players rested :

  • Veteran MS Dhoni has sent a clear message that he is here to stay, as he is shouldered with the responsibility of leading a team full of new faces.
  • Many fresh faces, who have been dominant with their performance during the Indian domestic season and the on-going IPL, have been awarded with a national call up, a list which includes KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Barinder Sran, and many more. 17 member Indian squad for West Indies picked, Shardul earns maiden call-up :

  • Alongside picking up the limited overs squad for India’s tour of Zimbabwe, BCCI also picked up a 17 member squad for India’s tour of West Indies in July.
  • However, the selectors have picked up a full strength squad for the series, in addition to appointing Ajinkya Rahane as the Indian Vice Captain. Additionally, Mumbai’s domestic star in the Ranji Season Shardul Thakur gets a maiden national call-up, despite not featuring even in a single match during this IPL.

  • Chris Gayle, who has landed himself in a fresh controversy thanks to his sexist remarks against an English Journalist, has defended himself from the fair share of criticism he has received.
  • “Now T20 is different. It’s not Test cricket. It’s chilled and fun and let’s do things different. So when Mel asks me that question I stay in the T20 mind, and answer informal and fun,” said Gayle, who considers the whole interview on a lighter point of view.

  • South African speedster Wayne Parnell took upto social media to announce his marriage to Aisha Baker in a function which was attended by approximately 400 guests.
  • Parnell, who had converted to Islam in 2011, expressed his gratitude to his kin in his twitter post. Parnell will leave for West Indies to join the squad for the tri series involving South Africa, Australia and West Indies.

Kusal Perera called in for Dhammika Prasad :

  • Injured Dhammika Prasad has been replaced by wicket-keeper batsman Kusal Perera for the rest of the series.
  • Perera, who had been serving an indefinite ban, was cleared off all charges after WADA had expressed doubts regarding the sample which was tested. Perera will hope to bolster the Sri Lankan batting line-up, who went out in a feeble manner against the English in the first Test.

  • English All-rounder Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka due to a leg injury incurred during the first Test. Chris Woakes, who has represented England in 6 Test matches, has been called in as the replacement in the 12-man team.

Shane Watson reprimanded for offensive language

  • Shane Watson has been reprimanded for breaching level 1 of IPL Code of Conduct. The 34 year old Australian all-rounder indulged in offensive language during RCB’s victory over DD at Raipur on Sunday, which was deemed as a breach of code.

  • While Chris Morris will return to South Africa after being knocked out of the tournament, he goes back as a better player thanks to his outstanding outing as a player for DD. Talking to the media following the 6 wicket loss, Morris talked about the influence of IPL on a cricketer’s career.
  • “IPL is an important part of a cricketer’s career. It is a lot about experience. I genuinely believe, and I mean it, that you come to India to mingle with the world’s best players and the world’s ex-best players. You don’t just learn as a cricketer but you learn about the game and learn what it takes to be a cricketer.   • Sri Lanka suffered a heavy loss to England at the Headingly, however, Sri Lankan middle order batsman Dinesh Chandimal remains positive about making a successful comeback.
