England coach Trevor Bayliss was disconsolate after finding out his players were drinking late until the wee hours in a middle of an international series. Soon after England beat West Indies at Bristol by 124 runs, a few of English players celebrated the win at a nightclub where Ben Stokes was involved in a scuffle which led to an actual bodily harm to a civilian.

The all-rounder was arrested and spent the night in the lock-up but was released the next day without any charge. While Stokes has been named in the Ashes squad but an investigation will be conducted by the ECB to find out the exact circumstances of the situation. In a conversation with Sky Sports, Bayliss expressed his displeasure on players celebrating late into the night.

“Definitely not (on asked about his approval of late night celebrations). They are professionals. The other night a few guys being out was very unprofessional in the middle of a series.”

Strauss will conduct an inquiry

Director of England cricket, Andrew Strauss didn’t comment on Stokes remaining as vice-captain of the side going forward. He is currently interviewing the players who were present when the incident occurred and will take disciplinary action if needed. Strauss and Bayliss haven’t imposed any curfew time on the team as they believed in providing a relaxed environment and expect players to act responsibly. In the wake of this incident, England might exercise some restrictions for the forthcoming Ashes in Australia.

“Certainly we will be looking into that. I have been with teams before and we have had curfews and that doesn’t work either. Whichever way you go a lot of the responsibility comes back to the players. They are adults and they have to take responsibility,” said Bayliss.

Bayliss backs Stokes as vice-captain

Bayliss though backed Stokes as the vice-captain as he is a leader amongst the group of players already. He hinted that after the investigation things might change. “What he has shown so far for us is that he is a leader within the group when it comes to cricket – there is no denying that but I’m sure there will be some investigations going forward. But at the moment I am quite happy for him to be the vice-captain,” he said.

Stokes won’t take any part in the ongoing ODI series. Strauss has confirmed that the all-rounder broke a finger during the incident and may not take part in the side games preceding the first Ashes Test which kicks off on November 23 in Brisbane.
