From making it to the semis with 3 wins in the last 3 league games, the Albert Tuti Patriots went on to clinch the title of TN Premier League in the inaugural edition after defeating the Chepauk Super Gillies at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in the finals on Sunday, where the highest and lowest totals of the tournament were recorded.
Chasing a mammoth 216, Chepauk Super Gillies started their chase in the worst possible manner. Ganesh Moorty started off the proceedings with the ball, he got success on the 2nd ball he bowled as Thalaivan Sargunam tried to hit down the ground but failed to clear mid-off. Gopinath hit the 4th ball of the over straight to point fielder. The next ball, Chepauk’s captain Sathish was beaten by the arm ball from Ganesh and was trapped in front. This was the 4th duck for Sathish in the tournament, already the most by any player. Just when everyone was in the moment of shock with the scoreboard reflecting 0/3, Sasidev edged the final ball of the over to the slip and it was 0/4.
The wicket also meant Ganesh Moorty recorded the 2nd hat-trick of the tournament. After being shaken by a quadruple wicket maiden in the very first over, the Super Gillies could only crawl near to 6 an over runrate. Later Balaji bagged a couple of wickets while Washington Sundar and Abhinav Mukund had a bowl at the end and picked a wicket each to bundle out Chepauk to 93, the lowest total of the tournament beating Tuti Patriots’ 95 at this very venue. Vasanth Saravanan top-scored for his side with 30.
On the big screen, MS Dhoni shared his love towards Chennai during the final through a video. The 10 second countdown was also done by Dhoni, who finished it with a two-fingered whistle and soon the 22,000 crowd at the venue erupted. The innings break saw the TNCA felicitating the likes of Ravi Shastri, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Allan Border and Dean Jones on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the tied Test match between the India and Australia sides at the Chepauk.
Earlier, after winning the all-important toss, Dinesh Karthik was very happy to elect to bat first. Sathish as usually opened the bowling and Kaushik Gandhi opened the account with a boundary down the ground on the 2nd ball. In the same over, Mukund drove towards covers on the first ball he faced to get off the mark with a boundary. The pair kept striking whenever they got the chances. Kaushik struck a six in the 3rd over off Alexander while Mukund bettered the 4th over smashing 4 delightful boundaries, including 3 in a row to Mukumthan.
The powerplay yielded 52 runs for the Tuti Patriots but it was just the start of the destruction. Kaushik struck a four and six in Yo Mahesh’s first over and brought up his fifty in the 11th over of the innings in 37 balls. Mukund, on the other hand, got through with some strokes behind the wicket. With a cut shot off Sai Kishore, Mukund brought up his fifty in 32 balls with 9 boundaries. The pair added more than hundred by 12th over for the opening wicket, the first century stand in TNPL at Chepauk.
After his fifty, Mukund turned out to be more dangerous as he hit a six and followed with a couple of fours against the left-arm spinners. Sai Kishore finally produced the breakthrough for Chepauk as Kaushik mistimed a sweep. This brought an end to the 132-run stand for the opening wicket and also brought their captain explosive Dinesh Karthik to the centre, who got going from the ball one.
Karthik’s innings included 5 fours and 4 big sixes. He got the quick runs with cheeky shots over fine leg and some lusty blows down the ground. He brought up his fifty in 24 balls, the joint fastest fifty in this TNPL. Karthik was run out on penultimate delivery after a 55 off 26 balls adding 82 off 37 balls for the 2nd wicket with Mukund. Abhinav Mukund remained unbeaten on 82 off 55 balls with 12 fours and a six to take his side to 215/2 in 20 overs, the highest total in the TNPL.
Brief Scores:
Albert Tuti Patriots: 215/2 in 20 overs (Abhinav Mukund 82*, Kaushik Gandhi 59, Dinesh Karthik 55; Sai Kishore 1/35) beat Chepauk Super Gillies: 93 in 18.5 overs (Vasanth Saravanan 30; Ganesh Moorthi 4/11, L Balaji 2/8) by 122 runs.
