Sarfraz Ahmed’s Pakistan team rose to the top of the T20I rankings after New Zealand‘s blip in the opening match of the three-match series against the hosts. Team India’s 53-run victory over the Kiwis meant that the Men in Green rose higher above New Zealand with 124 points as they slid down to 121 points.

For Pakistan to stay at the top of the rankings, the Indian team needs to win the series by a margin of at least 2-1, while they already have one in the bag. This was the first time that the Pakistani side is leading the T20I rankings, with the side always hanging at No.2 or 3.

Since the appointment of Sarfraz Ahmed as the skipper, they have won 12 games out of the 14 games in the shortest format. With a success rate of over 85%, the wicketkeeper-batsman has to go down as one of Pakistan’s best-limited overs skipper.

Decimal points

The Pakistani team was only a few decimal point below New Zealand before the opening T20I at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Pakistan meanwhile had completed a whitewash series against Sri Lanka where the Lankans never stood a chance to win.

India’s win saw the Kiwis drop three rating points which confirmed Pakistan’s position as the number one team. Twitter was one happy place for the Pakistani fans, as they crowded in numbers to support their team and congratulate them for their historic rise to the top of the rankings.

While there were fans, who thanked Team India for their victory, which helped the neighbours edge past the Blac Caps. There were other set who were happy with the development of their cricket under the captaincy of Sarfraz.
