Interestingly, it was Dhoni who, as a mark of respect, allowed Sourav to captain the side in the closing stages of the latter's last Test in Nagpur in 2008.

It is very rare for an Indian cricket fan to be excited and optimistic at the same time about its administration. Corruption, Match-fixing scandals, politicians entering the fray, is all they have listened throughout their life. And, despite the BCCI being the most powerful board in the world, it has more-often-than-not headlines for all the wrong reasons, resulting in fans being left disappointed form cricket’s parent body.

The last few years have been worse. Since the spot-fixing scandal in the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League, the BCCI has literally been non-functional with the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators [COA] calling the shots.

But this week, something refreshing has happened! In what has come as completely unprecedented news, former Indian captain and – The Godfather of Modern Indian Cricket- Sourav Ganguly was elected unanimously as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The former Indian captain is currently the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), a position which he has served for the past five years. According to rules laid down by the Lodha committee, an office-bearer can hold an administrative post for six years before he goes into the cooling period.

Dhoni fans go into overdrive after Ganguly’s comments on his future

So, what will be on President Ganguly’s agenda after he assumes office on October 23? This has been the question that has been on everyone’s mind ever since the news of him taking over as President. In all the press-interactions that Ganguly has had, the former Indian skipper has clearly mentioned a few markers he intends to work on, first and foremost being to clean up the mess that is the BCCI, which according to Ganguly is currently “in a state of emergency.”

Another pressing issue that President Ganguly will have to deal with is about the future of MS Dhoni in the Indian side. When asked about Dhoni’s future, Ganguly alluded that he will be meeting the selectors on October 24 to find out their thoughts. He also alluded to his desire to learn from Dhoni himself before they announce anything.

“I will find out from the selectors when I meet them on the 24th. I will find out what the selectors are thinking. Then I will put my opinion. Let’s see what Dhoni wants,” he said.

Ganguly’s statements have sent Dhoni fans in an overdrive. Dhoni, during the start of his captaincy days, had dropped Ganguly (and Rahul Dravid) from the ODI set-up in the 2007-08 CB series in Australia and many believe it’s karma which is biting Dhoni while others disagree with the same.

Interestingly, it was Dhoni who, as a mark of respect, allowed Sourav to captain the side in the closing stages of the latter’s last Test in Nagpur in 2008.
