After a rather disappointing outing in the Test series, team India arrived in the ODI series with a renewed side. The younger lot joined the squad and the Men in Blue were set to defy history. In the first ODI at Durban, skipper Virat Kohli led from the front to give India a historic win. With a lead of 1-0 in the six-match series, the visitors looked to extend their domination in series n Centurion.
The match began in fine fashion for the Indian side with Virat Kohli winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Clearly, after a successful run chase in Durban, the Indian team backed themselves to do so again in Centurion. South African openers, Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock, had a cautious start to their innings. They looked very watchful in their approach and looked keen on negating the new ball impact of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah.
However, in the process, the two batsmen ended up choking up the run flow. Hashim Amla looked to accelerate things after a certain stage in the game. But he ended up edging one to the wicketkeeper off the bowling of Bhuvneshwar. What followed next was an absolute collapse. After all the hard work of the openers, the fragile South African middle order collapsed big time.
The Indian wrist spinners – Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav – got in to action rightaway. Chahal dismissed Quinton de Kock in his very first over and sent him packing on 20. Seeing the ball turn big time, the Indian captain brought Kuldeep Yadav in to the attack as well. Kuldeep responded well by picking up two wickets in his first over.
On the very first ball of his spell, he dismissed the South African skipper Aiden Markram. Markram holed out in the deep in his attempt to slog a short delivery. A couple of deliveries later, Kuldeep managed to get an outside edge of the bat of David Miller. The slip fielder completed the easy catch. South Africa, from being 51/1 succumbed to 51/4 in the space of 6 deliveries.
Here is how the fans reacted to the South African collapse in the match:
