Dale Steyn, the South African fast bowler, has decided to call it a day from Test cricket with immediate effect. He was one of the greatest fast bowlers the nation has ever produced, if not the greatest. He ended his career in the longest format as South Africa’s leading wicket-taker. The speedster picked up 439 wickets in 93 matches with as many as 26 fifers and five 10-fers.

He made his debut back in 2004 against England in Port Elizabeth and played his last game at the very venue versus Sri Lanka in February 2019. On the field, he was always animated and ran in with ferocity whenever he was entrusted to bowl. He ruffled feathers of many in his illustrious career.

An emotional Dale Steyn

Even as he announced his retirement, Steyn showed his love for Test cricket and hailed the format as the best version of the game. He was deeply saddened, but on the other side, also understands the importance of continue playing. Steyn said that he wishes to focus on playing ODI and T20I cricket.

“Today I walk away from a format of the game I love so much. In my opinion Test cricket is the best version of this game. It tests you mentally, physically, emotionally. It’s terrible to consider never playing another Test again but what’s more terrifying is the thought of never playing again at all,” Steyn was quoted as saying in a retirement statement.

The last few years for Steyn have been a tad rough owing to the frequent injuries he suffered. This year, he played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). After a couple of matches in the cash-rich tournament, he hurt his shoulder and was ruled out of the event.

To add insult to injury, he was ruled out the 2019 World Cup as well. Steyn’s exclusion turned out to be a massive one as the Proteas could only manage a couple of victories in the mega event. Meanwhile, Twitterati can’t stop showering love and appreciation for Steyn on a wonderful career.
