The Indian U19 is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka next month for two four-day and five One Day matches, which starts from July 17. The Colts’ team was declared earlier this month and Arjun Tendulkar, the son of the de facto Sachin Tendulkar, found a place into the squad. He was picked for the four-day fixtures and wasn’t considered for the limited-overs contests to be played thereafter.

The same was for the reason that he won’t be eligible for selection in the U19 World Cup in 2020. The news of his selection was greeted with a mixed response. While some of them appreciated the move, a few exemplified it as ‘nepotism’. Arjun hasn’t done anything of sorts, but his family background already makes him a prominent name. His name has been doing the rounds for quite a while now.

Last year, he bowled at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground and smacked Johnny Bairstow, the English cricketer, flush on the toes after which the right-handed batsman hobbled off the park. The cricketer has honed his skills at a camp organized by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Dharamshala. He was also scheduled to play in the inaugural edition of the Mumbai T20 league.

Arjun’s tough road ahead

However, he pulled out of the tournament at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai citing reasons of refurbishing his skills. Coincidentally, his father was the brand ambassador of the event. In a recent revelation, Arjun’s bowling speed has been calculated to be around the 130 kmph. For the time being, the youngster would be keen to put forth some solid performances and grab the attention of the selectors.

He is presently in London honing his skills under the tutelage of Ravi Shastri, the Head Coach of the senior team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a picture of Shastri and Arjun. Nevertheless, the photo didn’t go down well with Twitterati and they bashed the board for promoting the teenager.
