Green wicket, bowler friendly conditions and Joe Root was absolutely certain they wanted to start the match with the ball in hand. The Indian batsmen who’ve been forever susceptible against the moving ball had a tough task ahead of them. Before that skipper Virat Kohli announced the three changes in the line-up Rishabh Pant was to make his debut, Jasprit Bumrah was back and so was Shikhar Dhawan.

Dhawan was the first one to make an impact as he saw through the initial burst from James Anderson and Stuart Broad, when Ben Stokes gave him room outside the off-stump he crashed it through the off-side for three square drives to different parts of the off side boundary. He scored 35 before being dismissed, KL Rahul also played a few good shots and looked certain about things in his knock of 23.

The openers gave them a 60-run start and proved to be a real platform as Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli dwelled up on it with a 159-run fourth wicket partnership. Rahane got out after playing his best knock in a really long time worth 81 via a splendid catch from Alastair Cook at first slip. Skipper Kohli played another one of his magnificent knocks and didn’t give the bowlers any opportunity until the 152nd ball of his innings. He edged one from Adil Rashid to Stokes at slip and fell just three runs short of his 23rd Test ton.

Thereafter, England made a decent enough comeback in the game keeping things tight. Rishabh Pant walked out to bat in the whites for the first time and owned the moment in style. The second ball he faced hit Rashid straight over his head for a six and just showed the world how his nerves act in such occasions.

Hardik Pandya after working really hard for 57 balls edged the last ball of the 87th over to give England their 6th success as it was stumps on day 1 with the Indian total on 307. For the home team Chris Woakes was the best bowler having dismissed the Indian top three in his first spell.
