Can things get worse, was the question asked after every match that Sri Lanka lost to India in this ongoing tour. After a 3-0 conclusion to the Test series where the Indians are the No.1 ranked team, there was hope Sri Lanka would compete in the ODIs. But one after the other they surrendered every time and in the end, it concluded with another clean sweep, as they owned the series 5-0.

Upul Tharanga was back for this game and won the toss, he thought batting first was a good option to protect his bowlers from getting trounced at the hands of the dominant Indian batters. Virat Kohli had no problem accepting the offer to bowl first as he made four changes in the team. Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel were rested while Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal walked into the team.

While it was Jasprit Bumrah who did the job for the team on most occasions, Bhuvneshwar making a return after a game’s rest picked his first wicket of the series as he caught Niroshan Dickwella off his own bowling. He went on to pick 5 wickets, his first such haul in ODI cricket and finished with figures of 9.4-0-42-5.

For Sri Lanka skipper Tharanga missed out a half century getting out on 49 while Lahiru Thirimanne proved his selection worth with a 67, Angelo Mathews was also around for 55 but took 98 balls. The Indian bowlers choked them towards the end and the innings once again crumbled for 238 all out in 49.4 overs.

The new opening pair of Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma couldn’t give India a good start as both the batters got out for 5 and 16 respectively. Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey joined hands for a 99-run partnership. As Pandey missed out on playing a big knock losing patience on 36, Jadhav walked out to the middle.

It was a perfect opportunity for him to play his natural game, and add runs under his belt. The Maharashtra skipper stayed on with the Indian skipper, took his time and knocked the ball around while also hitting the occasional boundaries. Virat, on the other hand, was too determined to be bothered by any of the Lankan bowlers. He stuck to his mission of taking the team home, played all classic cricket shots and kept getting runs over after over.

Jadhav got to his half century and Virat recorded his 30th ODI hundred towards the end and also hit the winning runs as the 32-year-old lost his wicket on 63. The Indian skipper remained unbeaten on 110 from 116 balls. Team India got over the line in the 47th overs with 6 wickets in hand.
