In the second T20 international between the two associate nations at Greater Noida, Afghanistan again performed splendidly to win the game and gain an unassailable lead of 2 nil. With one more match slated to go, Ireland would be looking to play for pride.
Earlier in the day, it was captain Asghar Stanizkai who won the toss as Afghanistan elected to bat first. They began with a jolt very first over as the talented Mohammed Shahzad was dismissed by Barry McCarthy for 4 runs. McCarthy came back in his second over and had Stanizkai back to the pavilion as Afghanistan were left reeling at 12/2.
Najeeb Tarakai and Samiullah Shenwari took hold of things as they rescued the Afghans from the early slump. Just as it seemed, Afghanistan were looking good, 2 quick wickets in the form of Shenwari and Shafiq put them on the backfoot.
In the midst of all the collapse and furore, Najeeb went on to smash a brilliant 90 runs from just 58 balls which included 7 boundaries and 5 sixes. Karim Janat and Mohammed Nabi’s quickfire innings in the end ensured Afghanistan posted a total of 184/8 in their quota of 20 overs.
Barry McCarthy went on to take four wickets. However, the rest of the bowlers were taken away to the cleaners. Stuart Thompson and Jacob Mulder got a wicket each.
On the other hand, Ireland were off to a steady start after losing their opener Stuart Thompson. Paul Stirling showed his prowess with a 15 ball 34 before Nabi got the breakthrough as Ireland were 60/2 after just 5 overs.
However, after a rain delay, the target was revised to 111 in 11 overs. Spinner Rashid Khan created havoc for the Ireland batsmen as he troubled them with his variations. In just 2 overs, he had extraordinary bowling figures of 2-1-3-5.
Ireland could only manage 93/9 in their 11 overs as Afghanistan rode upon Rashid’s stupendous bowling to win the game by 17 runs and lead the series 2-0. Undoubtedly, Rashid Khan has rewarded the man of the match.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:
