The historic Test match between India and Afghanistan, the first ever for the visitors got underway today in Bangalore. Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and decided to bat first. The pitch had some grass on it but looked really good for batting; the conditions were overcast to start with but the pacers didn’t manage to swing it and trouble the Indian openers thus setting the tone for the rest of the day.

Once the shine of the new ball was gone, Shikhar Dhawan pounced on the Afghan bowlers, skipper Asghar Stanikzai brought the spinners pretty early into play, off-spinner Mohammad Nabi was deployed in the 9th over, it was quiet but in his next the Indians got 12 runs and that was a start of the carnage that was to unfold.

Dhawan played some outstanding shots and the ball raced to the boundary more often than not and on other occasions landed in the semi-filled Chinnaswamy stands. The left-hander was particularly severe on Rashid Khan, the star bowler in the Afghan attack. He hit three boundaries in his first over which was the 14th of the match. Their third spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman was in the attack as well and suffered a similar fate.

The way Dhawan was batting it looked really ominous for Afghanistan and he completed his hundred before the lunch break. He got out soon after the hundred but Murali Vijay and KL Rahul kept the momentum going, they punished the bowlers, put them under a lot of pressure and forced them to bowl to their strengths. In the middle session it was all about runs but then there was a rain interruption and early Tea was called.

Vijay completed his hundred after the break and Rahul got to his fifty, but both the batters got out in quick succession. Cheteshwar Pujara played some positive shots and looked good for his 35 but was dismissed by Mujeeb. Rashid finally got a wicket after spending over 100 runs with that of Ajinkya Rahane, Indian wicketkeeper in the game Dinesh Karthik was run out for 4 towards the end of the day’s play and India went into stumps on 347/6.
