After winning the T20 series against Ireland, Afghanistan also clinched the One-Day International series between the two sides in some style. The series has been so far an exciting and promising one to witness with both the teams winning two games each before locking horns in the decider. Initially, it looked that Afghanistan would run away with the series without much effort as they managed to record victories in the first two ties but Ireland was not to be written off so easily. Ireland bounced back strongly proving their mettle and clinched the following two matches levelling the series 2-2.
The final thus promised a lot of action and curiosity but it was Afghanistan who came out on top in the end. Winning the toss Ireland opted to bat first but their outing was not a great one as Afghanistan bowled beautifully to restrict the Irish men to a score of 229. Ireland’s openers got off to a flowing start but a brilliant display from Rashid Khan who grabbed four wickets for just 29 runs dismantled the Irish batting attack. Rashid’s performance once again showed his character and why he has been picked in the Indian Premier League.
Chasing a low score of 229 the Afghanis did not start particularly well as they lost their openers quickly. But a heroic performance from Rahmat Shah saw them past the finishing line with ease. Shah who was unbeaten at the crease at a score of 108 at the end of the innings was well supported by Samiullah Shenwari as they Afghanis march towards Ireland’s total of 229. Ireland’s bowling was more or less dull as they struggled after grabbing two quick wickets early on in the innings. The series was an emphatic one to witness And the win was surely a huge one as far as Afghanistan Cricket is concerned.
