Hobart Hurricanes continued their winning run in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) as they defeated the Melbourne Stars without much fuss. Matthew Wade led the charge for them in the chase and slammed a half-century and a clinical effort from the bowlers in the first innings ensured that the Stars lost their second consecutive encounter.

After losing the toss, the Stars were sluggish to start the innings as their openers Travis Dean and Ben Dunk were sent back to the hut with not many on the board. The skipper Glenn Maxwell and Nick Larkin then rebuilt the innings and despite struggling at the start, got going in the second half. The former especially was in the mod today as he took the attack to the opposition.

He smashed five sixes during his 31-ball 47-run knock and the switch hit which went for a maximum was the highlight of the game. Meanwhile, Larkin was also in good touch as the duo added 87 runs for the third wicket. Just when the Stars entertained the thoughts of going berserk in the last few overs, the part-time bowler D’Arcy Short struck and derailed the innings.

They never got the finishing touches and could only muster 155 runs for the loss of five wickets after 20 overs which was competitive but not a winning total.

Wade and Short lead the way

The chase was never going to be a tough challenge for the in-form Hurricanes. Their opening pair of Short and Wade got them off to a brilliant start adding 55 runs for the first wicket and a quick wicket of Alex Doolan raised hopes for the visitors. But Wade was intent on not giving away his wicket this time around.

He milked singles cleverly and punished the loose deliveries. Even though the wickets fell at the fag end of the innings thanks to the ever consistent Sandeep Lamichhane, Hobart were always on track and required run-rate wasn’t demanding which kept them steady. Eventually, they sealed the chase in the 19th over with six wickets in hand.
