The Mumbai Indians (MI) won their third game of this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL) against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad by 40 runs. Subsequently, the Rohit Sharma-captained team won back-to-back games in the IPL 2019.

Pollard takes Mumbai to respectability

The Sunrisers won the toss and elected to field first. The decision worked out well for them as the visiting team was restricted to 136 for seven in 20 overs. Mohammad Nabi struck first blood, removing Rohit Sharma in the fourth over. Speedster Sandeep Sharma trapped Suryakumar Yadav to get the second wicket. Ishan Kishan, who replaced Yuvraj Singh, was run out after he scored 17 from 21 balls.

Quinton de Kock and Krunal Pandya were nipped out by Siddarth Kaul. Hardik Pandya also perished for 14. However, Kieron Pollard came to the party and churned out a superlative knock of 46 runs from 26 deliveries with the help of two fours and four over-boundaries. Mumbai were reeling even after the 18th over, but Pollard’s onslaught in the death propelled the score. Rahul Chahar also hit two fours.

Joseph dictates terms

David Warner and Jonny Bairstow started in a positive manner and put on 33 runs in 22 balls. Rahul Chahar nipped out Bairstow to give SRH their first breakthrough. In the very next over, Alzarri Joseph castled Warner and went on to bowl a wicket-maiden. The Windies pacer dismissed Vijay Shankar thereafter. Manish Pandey also couldn’t get going and got out after scoring 16 from 21 balls.

Thereafter, Windies pacer Alzarri Joseph, who replaced Lasith Malinga, picked up a six-wicket haul and broke the backbone of the SRH batting order. For the hosts, the required run-rate kept mounting at an alarming rate and Kumar’s men fell behind significantly. In the end, the Sunrisers were bowled out for 96 in 17.4 overs even as Joseph picked up a six-wicket haul.
