The series opener between hosts Zimbabwe and India was a simple affair. India registered an easy 9 wicket win to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Chasing 169 runs for victory, the new look Indian side led by debutant KL Rahul (100 from 115 balls) and Ambati Rayudu (62 from 120 balls) faced no trouble in overhauling the target.

The match belonged to KL Rahul who became the first Indian debutant ever to hit a century on debut. He received praise for his calm yet well-paced innings. Ambati Rayudu also played the perfect supporting role to the Karnataka batsman, defining his reputation of a rock in the middle order. Unfortunately, he did not receive his share of appreciation and was rather mocked by fans for playing slowly.

His 62 runs knock came at the cost of 120 balls. And, this became the talking point of the match for fans. But, it was a commendable knock. The target set was paltry and Rahul, at the other end, was playing smoothly.

The Hyderabad batsman understood the nature of the wicket perfectly and played out the Zimbabweans with ease without putting any pressure on himself. In was indeed because of him that Rahul could reach his century. Rayudu preferred ticking singles and standing at the non-strikers end to give a chance to Rahul to complete his century.
