The year 2017 began in the worst possible manner as far as BCCI is concerned after the Supreme Court gave a massive setback to the richest cricketing board in the world by sacking its president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke. A show cause notice has been issued of mendacity and contempt of court. Both Thakur and Shirke will get time until January 19 to reply to the Supreme Court.

The declaration came after Lodha Committee’s 3rd status report which they had submitted on November 14 asking for removing all top office bearers of the BCCI and all the state association. It is also expected that the top brass of BCCI officials will be replaced by a panel of administrators. “The Supreme Court passes an order directing the BCCI president and secretary to desist from any board functions from here on,” was quoted as saying by the ruling party to the Times of India.

The Supreme Court appointed senior advocates Fali S Nariman and Gopal Subramnaniam and took suggestions from them on which names are deemed capable to administer BCCI in the correct track. Justice Lodha while welcoming the hearing said, “The reforms were laid down on July 18, BCCI was bound to follow it but they didn’t. Hence consequences had to follow. This was to happen, and now this has happened. Had submitted three reports before Supreme court, even then it wasn’t implemented. Once [the] committee’s reforms were accepted by the SC in its July 18 order, it had to be implemented, this is logical consequence. It’s a victory for the game of cricket. Administrators will come and go and I am sure the game will flourish.”

The Supreme Court had appointed the Lodha Committee in 2015 after involvement of Indian players in spot-fixing during the IPL. The decision of removing Thakur and Shirke came as a very bold move and the twitteratti was pretty active in discussing the ouster of the two. Here are some of the best tweets.
