After the first day’s play between Bangladesh and Windies at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, the hosts were the happier side, having scored 315 for the loss of eight wickets. The second day turned out to be one for the bowlers as the ball spun sharply and by the close of play, the Tigers are leading by 133 runs with five wickets left in their second innings.
Naeem shines on debut
Naeem Hasan and Taijul Islam, the overnight batsmen, could add only nine runs to the score as Jomel Warrican removed Naeem and number eleven Mustafizur Rahman in quick succession. The Windies found themselves in dire straits having lost their first five wickets for 88 runs. The likes of Kraigg Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Sunil Ambris and Roston Chase got starts.
However, none was able to carry on and convert. The Bangladesh spinners- Shakib Al Hasan, Taijul and Naeem- turned out to be unplayable. Nevertheless, Shimron Hetmyer took the bowling by the scruff of their necks and scored 63 runs from 47 balls with the help of five boundaries and four sixes. The left-hander also set a useful stand of 92 runs with keeper Shane Dowrich.
Bangladesh in tatters
Dowrich also scored 63 runs from 101 deliveries and stayed no out as the visitors were folded for 246 in their first innings and conceded a lead of 78 runs. The debutant Naeem went to pick up a five-wicket haul in his 14 overs. The Tigers didn’t have the best of times in the second instance, both the openers- Imrul Kayes and Soumya Sarkar- perished in pretty quick succession.
Mominul Haque and Mohammad Mithun got starts, but couldn’t survive the burst from the spinners. Skipper Shakib couldn’t make an impact either. Mushfiqur Rahim and nightwatchman Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained not out with Bangladesh in a fair amount of trouble. For the Caribbean team, Warrican and Devendra Bishoo picked up two wickets while Chase got one.
