Hobart Hurricanes have arguably been a team to beat this edition’s BBL. After three victories in a row, Matthew Wade and Co were up against Perth Scorchers at the Aurora Stadium in Launceston. The Scorchers, on the contrary, were languishing in the second half of the points table. To their dismay, they lost their third contest by seven wickets as the Hurricanes continued with their winning streak.

Hurricanes’ bowlers strangle the Scorchers

The Hurricanes won the toss and elected to field, and the decision paid dividends for the reason that they were able to restrict the Scorchers to 107 for eight in 20 overs. James Faulkner trapped William Bosisto plumb in front to pick up the first wicket. Left-arm spinner Clive Rose picked up the other opener in Michael Klinger. Right-arm speedster Riley Meredith removed skipper Ashton Turner in the fourth over.

Cameron Bancroft, whose ban ended yesterday, didn’t have a happy comeback as he became Meredith’s second victim. Thereafter, Hilton Cartwright and Ashton Agar put their heads down and cobbled a stand of 46 runs off 53 balls. However, both perished in quick succession after scoring 29 and 32 respectively. Nathan Courter-Nile scored a quickfire 20 to take the Scorchers over the 100-run mark.

All too easy for Hobart

The run-chase wasn’t expected to be a hard grind for the Hurricanes. Their openers, wicketkeeper Wade and D’Arcy Short didn’t go hell for leather but put on 50 runs in 44 balls to lay the platform. Jhy Richardson removed Wade, who scored 24 runs with three fours, to strike first blood. Thereafter, Alex Doolan and Short shared a 31-run stand after which Agar accounted for Short’s wicket in the 13th over.

At that point in time, the Hurricanes needed 27 runs in 44 balls, and it wasn’t expected to trouble Hobart much. Ben McDermott became the third wicket to fall to Agar. Speedster Courter-Nile picked up the fourth wicket, but the match was all over bar the shouting. In the end, Doolan remained not out on 41 from 36 balls with six boundaries and the Hurricanes won with 15 deliveries to spare.
