India A registered their second consecutive victory in the ongoing tri-series in England as they defeated England Lions comfortably by 102 runs. Mayank Agarwal led the way again with the bat for his team as he notched up yet another ton and continued his great run of form from the domestic cricket. After posting a formidable total on the board, the bowlers did their job perfectly with Shardul Thakur leading the attack and bundled out the opposition in the 42nd over.

India A opted to bat first after winning the toss as the openers Shubman Gill and Agarwal got them off to a brilliant start. Both played some eye-catching strokes as they added 165 runs in 28 overs. The duo completed their respective half-centuries as Gill was scalped by Ed Barnard on 72 to slow down the scoring rate of the innings. But his partner kept going and scored a scintillating ton. Unfortunately, he couldn’t convert it into a big one and was dismissed by the opposition skipper Steven Mullaney for 112.

Agarwal scored 112 off just 104 balls with 10 fours and 4 sixes. However, his wicket helped the hosts apply brakes on the run-scoring of the Men in Blue. Their bowlers staged a stunning fightback even as Hanuma Vihari tried to play some shots. The likes of Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were sent back early courtesy of Matthew Fisher. But Deepak Hooda arrested the slide to form the stand of 77 runs with Vihari as India A posted a decent total of 309 runs. Vihari also scored a half-century and Hooda made a valuable contribution of 33 runs.

Thakur leads the way

Given the nature of the pitch at the Grace Road, it was expected to be a close game. But the Indian bowlers led by Thakur scalped the in-form top-order of the Lions to reduce them to 32/3 in the eighth over. The centurions in the last couple of games, Sam Hain and Nick Gubbins, couldn’t bail the team out of the trouble this time. Liam Livingstone and Ben Foakes tried to resurrect the innings with a decent partnership.

But the spinners, Krunal Pandya and Krishnappa Gowtham never allowed them to score the runs freely. At one stage, they were 116/6 and while it seemed that the end was nigh, Liam Dawson and Barnard stitched a crucial partnership of 67 runs only to delay the Indian victory. Once, Hooda scalped the former, the tail didn’t wag much as Thakur and Khaleel Ahmed unleashed their yorkers.

It was a comprehensive victory in the end for the visitors as they topped the points table as well. They still have one more game to play against Windies A who have lost both their encounters so far.
