The match between Comilla Victorians and Khulna Titans at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium turned out to be a fairly high-scoring one. Eventually, it was the Victorians, who emerged victorious by three wickets to garner their fourth victory in this edition’s Bangladesh Premier League (IPL). Meanwhile, the Titans’ campaign went from bad to worse and they need to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

Siddique scores big

The decision to field first after winning the toss didn’t quite work out for the Victorians as the Titans racked up 181 for seven in 20 overs. Mohammad Saifuddin nipped out Jahurul Islam early, but Junaid Siddique and Al-Amin, who played his first match in this BPL, put on 71 runs for the second wicket in 39 deliveries. Shahid Afridi cleaned up Al-Amin, who scored 32 from 19 balls, to break the partnership.

Mahmudullah cleared the ropes a couple of times to score 16 before falling prey to Afridi, who got his second wicket. Siddique carried on and racked up 70 runs from 41 balls with four boundaries and as many sixes. Dawid Malan played a handy knock of 29 from 25 balls with three fours and a six. Afridi was the Victorians’ most successful bowler with three wickets while pacer Wahab Riaz picked up a couple.

Tamim delivers

Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque Bijoy made sure that the Victorians started their run-chase on a positive note courtesy of a 115-run stand off 73 balls. Even as Anamul played the sheet anchor’s role, the left-handed Tamim played some scorching strokes to notch 73 runs from 42 deliveries with as many as 12 boundaries and one six. Sri Lankan speedster Lasith Malinga dismissed him to separate the duo.

In the next over, Mahmudulah chipped in with the scalp of Anamul after he scored 40 from 37 balls with five fours. Shamsur Rahman and Liam Dawson perished cheaply. In the last two overs, Comilla Victorians needed 19 runs. Shahid Afridi deposited Junaid Khan for a six, but the latter got rid of him in the same over. It was Thisara Perera’s cameo of 18 from seven balls that took the Victorians to yet another triumph.
