Day 3 of the ongoing second Test between India and England saw the hosts establish their dominance against the Ben Stokes-led side. Day 2 of the clash ended with Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma at the crease.

Both batters were sent packing early, as Jaiswal was dismissed for 17 runs and Rohit scored 13 runs. After the openers’ early dismissal, it was the knock of star batter Shubman Gill that stabilised the innings for India. Scoring 104 runs in 147 deliveries, Gill gave a fitting reply to his critics, as he had been under major scrutiny for his form in recent times.

Furthermore, Shreyas Iyer added 29 runs on the board, with Axar Patel scoring 45 runs in 84 deliveries. With Ravichandran Ashwin scoring 29 runs, the Indian team posted a total of 255 runs on the board, giving England a target of 399 runs to chase down and win the game.

As for the visitors, Tom Hartley was the highest wicket-taker, with four wickets to his name. Rehan Ahmed took three wickets, with James Anderson taking two and Shoaib Bashir striking once. Aiming to chase down the humongous target, England got off to a subpar start as opener Ben Duckett fell prey to India’s bowling attack quite early into his knock as he departed for just 28 runs in 27 deliveries.

After a clear inside edge onto the pad, the ball went up to the leg side, and after a magnificent full-length dive by wicketkeeper KS Bharat, India got their first breakthrough in the second innings as Duckett went back to the pavilion. Day 3 of the clash ended with Zak Crawley and Rehan Ahmed on the crease, unbeaten for the scores of 29* and 9* runs, respectively. England scored 67 runs with the loss of a wicket and they still require 332 runs more to win the second Test of the series.
