The 18th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a fiery clash between the defending champions Gujarat Titans and the Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab Kings at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Thursday, April 13.

Gujarat Titans won the toss, and skipper Hardik Pandya elected to field first. Coming in to bat, man-in-form Shikhar Dhawan failed to make an impact as he was sent back to the pavilion after scoring just eight runs. Prabhsimran Singh failed to go big as well after being dismissed for a duck.

However, the middle-order of the side came through. Coming in to bat after the fall of the first wicket, Matt Short played a resilient knock and was the highest run-getter for Punjab in the first innings. The 27-year-old scored 36 runs in 24 deliveries to release some pressure off his shoulders.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Jitesh Sharma, and Sam Curran played a slow but steady knock, hindering the run rate of the side, but Shahrukh Khan’s cameo of 22 runs off 9 deliveries was crucial as Punjab posted 153 runs after 20 overs. Mohit Sharma made his debut for Gujarat Titans, and the 34-year-old did not disappoint as he took two wickets and conceded just 18 runs in the four overs he bowled.

Apart from him, Mohammad Shami, Joshua Little, Alzarri Joseph, and Rashid Khan took one wicket each. While chasing the target, the defending champions put in a fabulous performance. Veteran keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha scored 30 runs off 19 balls to give them a brisk start.

However, it was the knock of star Indian batter Shubman Gill that propelled Gujarat to a magnificent victory. The 23-year-old scored 67 runs in 49 deliveries, and his knock was integral to the defending champions ultimately winning the match.

When Gujarat required seven off the last over, Sam Curran sent Gill packing on the second ball of the over, and as the pressure mounted, Rahul Tewatia clinched the win with a boundary off the penultimate delivery as Gujarat Titans won the match by six wickets, with just a ball to spare.
