In the 26th match of the ongoing IPL 2023, Rajasthan Royals suffered a defeat at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants as Avesh Khan delivered a gallant final over to inflict a 10-run defeat on the visitors.
Playing their first game of the season at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Rajasthan Royals had the coin in their favour as they put the visitors to bat first after winning the toss. For Rajasthan, Trent Boult initiated the proceedings on a high as the veteran Kiwi bowler bowled a maiden in the very first over of the innings. This also happened to be the 11th maiden over that KL Rahul had played since IPL 2014. However, the LSG opening duo of Rahul and Kyle Mayers did put up a show to stitch an 82-run opening stand in 64 balls, before Rahul was dismissed by Jason Holder.
While Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda both fell cheaply in quick succession, it was Mayers who, continuing his fine run, notched up another half-century to bail his team out. Mayers scored 51 runs in 42 balls, courtesy of four fours and three maximums. Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran too contributed down the order with scores of 21 and 29 as well. For RR, R. Ashwin claimed two wickets whereas Sandeep Sharma, Trent Boult and Jason Holder picked one wicket each as LSG finished their first innings on a score of 154.
Coming into the chase, RR had a great start as both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler helped them climb up the board by putting up an 87-run stand for the first wicket. However, from there, it only took the home side 17 runs to lose four of their wickets. RR traversed from 87/0 to 104/4 in just 23 deliveries. While Sanju Samson fell to an unfortunate run-out, Buttler lost his wicket in an attempt to accelerate the innings by handing a catch to Ravi Bishnoi off Marcus Stoinis.
While Devdutt Padikkal and Riyan Parag did try to stitch a winning stand, it however couldn't save the Sanju Samson-led side as the visitors ultimately defeated them by 10 runs. While Padikkal scored 26, Riyan remained not out on 15. For LSG, Avesh Khan picked three wickets whereas Stoinis claimed two.
