Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders

In the 61st match of the IPL 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Chennai Super Kings by six wickets at MA Chidambaram Stadium in order to keep their hopes alive to qualify for the playoffs. Notably, batting first, the MS Dhoni-led side struggled to get going as opener Ruturaj Gaikwad was sent back to the pavilion on 17 runs off 13 deliveries. Ajinky Rahane too couldn’t make any kind of impact as CSK were 61-2 after eight overs.

Post that, KKR’s spinners didn’t give any room to CSK batters to dominate. Batting at number five, Shivam Dube was the only positive for the side as the 29-year-old played some really good cricket to keep the scoreboard ticking. The all-rounder smashed 48* runs off 34 deliveries while opener Devon Conway finished as the second-highest run-scorer of the team as the New Zealand international hit 30 runs off 28 deliveries.

Notably, Ambati Rayudu once again failed to get going while Moeen Ali and MS Dhoni couldn’t make a lot of impact. Ravindra Jadeja meanwhile scored 20 runs off 24 deliveries as CSK posted 144 runs in 20 overs. With the ball, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine did really well, picking up two wickets each while Shardul Thakur looked really good as well with one wicket.

When it came to the chase, KKR lost two early wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer. Jason Roy too lost his wicket soon after that as the visiting team was under tremendous pressure. However, the duo of Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh played some sensational cricket to bail KKR out of a difficult situation. Their partnership of 99 runs completely changed the complexion of the game as KKR went on to win the match by six wickets.

With that, the two-time champions moved to number seven in the IPL points table while CSK remain at number two. Even though CSK have more or less secured a place in the IPL playoffs but it might get tougher for them to qualify in the top two.
