'It sure is HISTORIC' - Twitter goes gaga as BCCI announces combined bid valuation of INR 4669.99 crore for Women's Premier League

Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow were picked up by successful bidders on Wednesday, January 25.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) bagged INR 4669.99 crore from the bidding of five teams for the inaugural season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) on Wednesday (January 25). The BCCI has also revealed the successful bidders and five new franchises for the much-awaited women's cricket league.

Adani Sportsline Pvt Ltd won the bid for the Ahmedabad franchise with the biggest bid of INR 1289 crore while Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd got the Mumbai franchise with the second-highest bid of INR 912.99 crore.

Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd secured the Bengaluru franchise for INR 901 crore and JSW GMR Cricket Pvt Ltd won the bid for Delhi for INR 810 crore. Capri Global Holding Pvt Ltd managed to put in a winning bid of INR 757 crore for the Lucknow franchise as the overall sum reached the INR 4669.99 crore mark.

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah also revealed that the women's league will be named as Women's Premier League in his latest Tweet. He added that it is a historic day in cricket and highlighted that the WPL's bidding sum broke the record of the inaugural men's IPL in 2008.

"Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men's IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered Rs.4669.99 Cr in total bid," Jay Shah wrote in his Tweet.

Shah also added that this will be a beginning in women's cricket and it will transform the entire sports fraternity. He said that the WPL will bring reforms that will benefit each and every stakeholder as well.

"This marks the beginning of a revolution in women's cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey ahead not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sports fraternity. The #WPL would bring necessary reforms in women's cricket and would ensure an all-encompassing ecosystem that benefits each and every stakeholder," Jay Shah added.

The BCCI also garnered attention when it announced that Viacom18 has won media rights for the first five seasons for a mammoth number of INR 951 crore. The staggering media rights value and the new franchises' valuation will be a big boost for the development of women's cricket all over the world.
