The first Test between India and Bangladesh did not get off on the right foot for the Indian team. It is worth noting that both sides locked horns at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from September 19 for the first Test, and the clash began with team India batting first after losing the toss.

The hosts got off to a subpar start as skipper Rohit Sharma was shown the way to the pavilion for just six runs. Furthermore, things went from bad to worse for the side after Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were dismissed early for 0 and six runs, respectively.

However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant stabilised the innings a little with their stand in the middle order. Jaiswal opened the innings and amassed 56 runs to his name in 118 deliveries, whereas Pant scored 39 runs in 52 deliveries. After the stand in the middle order, it was the partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja that put India in the driver’s seat.

Coming into bat in a bothersome moment with the score reading 144/6, both Ashwin and Jadeja played marvellous knocks and denied Bangladesh any more wickets throughout Day 1 of the clash. Ashwin went on to complete his century, defying age and showcasing his class at the highest level once more.

Ashwin scored his century in just 108 deliveries, playing a knock for the ages and helping India post a total of 339 runs with the loss of six wickets. Ashwin amassed 102* runs to his name, whereas Ravindra Jadeja scored 86* runs

As Day 2 approaches, Bangladesh will aim to break the partnership, dismiss the remaining Indian batters and go out to bat as soon as possible to minimise the deficit. However, seeing the nature of the pitch, the hosts will not be making it easy for Bangladesh.
