India and Pakistan are locking horns in the Super 4 fixture of the Asia Cup 2023 on Sunday, September 10 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and elected to field first. India made a couple of changes to their playing XI as they brought in Jasprit Bumrah in place of Mohammed Shami. KL Rahul also made his comeback to the team after recovering from his injury and replaced Shreyas Iyer who got ruled out due to a back spasm.

Notably, Iyer had also made a comeback to the team after going through rehabilitation following his successful back injury which kept him out of action since March 2023. The 28-year-old scored 14 off nine balls in the previous game vs Pakistan before getting caught out at mid-wicket off a short ball.

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar wasn't too happy with Iyer getting injured again and questioned his fitness.

“I'm just intrigued by Shreyas Iyer's fitness, if that's the case. He's had a long layoff. The big story was that he's fit now. He looked good in that 20-odd runs he scored against Pakistan. And now he got a back spasm. You got to start looking at players if there are such issues for captain and team management. We were waiting for him to come back, gave him first match and second match. It's unfortunate, I'm just glad Ishan Kishan is playing,” Manjrekar said on Star Sports following the toss.

Iyer is India's third-highest run-scorer since World Cup 2019

Iyer is India’s third-highest run scorer in ODIs after the 2019 World Cup with 1435 runs to his name from 34 innings at an average of 37.76 and a strike rate of 96.89 with two hundreds and 12 fifties to his name. The Mumbai-born batter is expected to play a crucial role in the middle order in the upcoming World Cup 2023 scheduled to begin from October 05.

Indian fans will hope that he recovers quickly and gets much-needed game time before the mega event. Meanwhile, X was buzzing with hilarious memes after Iyer got injured once again.
